Kinja'd!!!

This is my father-in-law back in 1949. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and saw action in Korea. He returned and entered OCS, then did two tours of Vietnam. He retired with the rank of Colonel. A great guy who, sadly, never met his grandsons. I wish they had known him.

Thanks to all those who serve.

My grand-dad, for whom I was named, died the year before I was born. He was Navy, entered just too late for WWII, and ended up in Korea as a port administrator after a stint in tin cans. Two of his three brothers were (Pacific Theater)Marines, and (Western Front)Army in WWII, don't remember about the third. All made it back. My grandmother's brother was a tank commander in Korea (including the Chosin campaign IIRC), and she has a cousin I've had long talks with (about cars and military vehicles) who served in 'Nam. Both are thankfully still alive.

I had a neighbor in Houston who survived Chosin. Must have been one tough mf'er. And I forgot to mention my mom's late husband (not my dad) who was wounded at Pusan in the early days of the Korean War. He was in the 2nd ID when he was hit in the head and came home. Another capital guy. I miss him.

My great-uncle was in Texas for years and years - I think Victoria for the most part. It's possible he knew your neighbor. He's now retired, but he was a surgeon. Maybe something about Chosin made people try to find somewhere warm to settle down?

Fantastic story. My son is a Marine, as is my father-in-law (he's retired), my Dad was Navy. I'm AF. I think the days of having a long lineage of military service are not long lived though. Hard to say. I appreciate his service. I love the old school pic, very cool.
